AMSTERDAM — Ahold here said Friday that first-quarter comparable-store sales rose 0.7% at Stop & Shop and fell 0.8% at Giant-Landover. Strong trends continued at Giant-Carlisle, where comps rose 6.3% for the period. The company did not break out sales results for the Tops chain, which it is seeking to sell. Overall sales at the Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover division were up 1.8%, to $5.1 billion, compared with year-ago results, while sales at Giant-Carlisle were up 16%, to $1.3 billion, due in part to the acquisition of 13 stores from Clemens Family Markets last year. Ahold said its total sales for the first quarter were up 5.8% at constant currency exchange rates, but were down 0.7%, to about $17.85 billion (U.S.).
