BATAVIA, Ill. — Aldi said it is assisting law enforcement officials in investigating a possible security breach related to debit-card readers at its stores that were tampered with to steal customer payment card information.

The retailer said it was informed that a “limited number” of debit-card terminals at some of its stores were compromised. Local news reports indicated that stores in suburban Chicago may have been affected. The Daily Herald newspaper, based in Arlington Heights, Ill., reported that police there said thieves were using stolen personal information to withdraw money at automated-teller machines in California.

Aldi said it had conducted a thorough review of all stores nationwide and removed terminals that may have been affected. “Aldi is committed to protecting our customers and their electronic information. Payment card companies have been notified so they can take appropriate steps such as monitoring accounts or reissuing cards,” the company said in a statement. “In addition, we have implemented additional security measures to prevent this type of attack from occurring again.”
