AWG Adds Albertsons Stores, Warehouse

Associated Wholesale Grocers said yesterday that it will begin supplying the Texas division of Albertsons LLC, and that it will also acquire 23 Albertsons in Oklahoma, to be divided up among four of its distribution customers.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Associated Wholesale Grocers here said yesterday that it will begin supplying the Texas division of Albertsons LLC, and that it will also acquire 23 Albertsons in Oklahoma, to be divided up among four of its distribution customers. AWG also will acquire a 1.1 million-square-foot distribution center in Ft. Worth, Texas, from Albertsons LLC that it will use to supply the stores in the Texas division. Terms of the transactions were not disclosed. Albertsons’ Texas division currently encompasses 141 stores, including the 23 stores to be sold and three others that will be closed, a spokeswoman for Albertsons LLC told SN. RPCS Inc., an employee-owned independent based in Springfield, Mo., agreed to acquire nine of the 23 Albertsons locations that are being sold, plus three fuel centers; Williams Discount Foods, a 15-unit operator based in Oklahoma City, plans to acquire six of the stores; Reasor’s, Tahlequah, Okla., plans to acquire one location; and Homeland Stores, a subsidiary of AWG, plans to buy the rest. All of the stores are expected to be converted to the banners of their new owners.
