Diced onions behind salmonella outbreak, packages recalled across 22 states
So far 73 illnesses have been linked to the recall

Packages of diced onions are responsible for a salmonella outbreak that has been linked to 73 illnesses across 22 states, reports the New York Times.
The now recalled product, Gills Onions, was being sold in Stater Bros. Markets, Bashas,’, and Smart & Final stores. The California-based company made the voluntary recall out of an “abundance of caution.”
The alert involved packages of diced yellow onions, red onions, onions and celery, a mix of onions, celery, and carrots known as mirepoix. The products, which have a used-by date of August 2023, were sold in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
The Food and Drug Administration used its traceback investigation to link Gills Onions to the salmonella outbreak.
This marks the second food recall in as many days. Earlier in the week, Baker Farms, located in Norman Park, Ga., issued a voluntary recall on 16-ounce bags of Kroger collard greens.
Kroger said it has removed all of the bags from the shelves, and so far no incidents have been reported.
