Dollar Tree Accelerates Cooler Rollout

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Dollar Tree here on Thursday said it will add coolers for frozen and refrigerated foods to 550 stores this year, the most it has ever added in a year.

“This category serves the current needs of our customers, drives traffic into our stores and provides incremental sales across all categories including our higher-margin discretionary product,” said Robert Sasser, chief executive officer, Dollar Tree, during a conference call with analysts discussing second-quarter results.

The company added 215 coolers in the second fiscal quarter, hitting the mid-year mark with coolers in 2,993 stores, out of its total of 4,842 locations. Dollar Tree also opened 81 new stores in the quarter and relocated and expanded 32 existing stores, for a 7% increase in square footage.

Net income for the quarter, which ended Aug. 3, rose 4.6%, to $124.7 million, on an 8.8% increase in sales, to $1.85 billion. Comparable-store sales were up 3.7%.
