BIG Y NAMES TAMI TO SUCCEED SARNO AS TECH VP

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y Foods here has named Michael A. Tami vice president of information resources and technology. His new responsibilities include computer systems and applications development, store systems implementation and support, and computer operations, including networking. He will oversee the development of a knowledge infrastructure for the company. Tami succeeds recently retired John N. Sarno, vice president of information systems, and reports to Herbert T. Dotterer, senior vice president, finance and administration. Tami has been director of information systems since coming to Big Y in 1998. Prior to that, he had more than 20 years of experience within the food industry, starting in 1979 at Riverside Markets, Hooversville, Pa., where he became manager of applications development. In 1991 he joined Penn Traffic, Syracuse, N.Y., as director of information technology.

SUPERMARKET VETERAN EFIRD NAMED FRED'S PRESIDENT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's Inc. has named Bruce A. Efird president, effective Sept. 22, succeeding the retiring John D. Reier, who becomes vice chairman of Fred's board. Efird, 48, most recently was executive vice president, merchandising, at Meijer Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich., where he was responsible for all merchandising, marketing and advertising functions as well as for pricing and e-commerce. Prior to that, he was executive vice president/general manager for Bruno's Supermarkets, Birmingham, Ala. Efird began his retail career at Food Lion in 1984.

REDNER'S NAMES HOPP VP AND GENERAL COUNSEL

READING, Pa. — Redner's Markets has named Jason B. Hopp its new vice president and general counsel. Hopp, a board member since 2006, will assume his new position Sept. 4. He will provide advice and counsel on all legal matters pertaining to Redner's Markets and its entities, as well as coordinating and supervising the company's risk management and security and loss-prevention departments.
