SPARTAN STORES PROMOTES EIDSON TO PRESIDENT
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Spartan Stores here said it has promoted Dennis Eidson to president of the company and named him to the board of directors. Eidson, who joined Spartan in 2003 as executive vice president of marketing and merchandising, had been promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer in February of this year. He remains chief operating officer, and continues to report to Craig Sturken, who remains chairman and chief executive officer and relinquishes the role of president to Eidson. Under the new organizational structure, Derek Jones, executive vice president, supply chain, will report to Eidson, and Tom Berg, vice president of business development, will report to Jones. Jones and Berg had previously reported to Sturken. Spartan's board expands to nine members with Eidson's appointment, which expires in 2010. “The position of president and new reporting structure will allow us to better accommodate our continued growth,” said Sturken, who said he would focus less on day-to-day operations and more on “long-term strategic growth aspects” of the company's business plan.
KLUG NAMED PRESIDENT OF SO. CALIF. ALBERTSONS
MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu here yesterday said it has named Sue Klug president of its Southern California division. She had been senior vice president, sales and marketing, for the Retail West region. Pete Van Helden, who had been both president of the Southern California division and executive vice president, Retail West, will focus on overseeing the Retail West region. In a prepared statement, Supervalu noted that Klug had been responsible for several initiatives in Southern California since Supervalu acquired the Albertsons stores there last year, including the relaunch of the Lucky banner in that market. Before the acquisition, Klug had been senior vice president, sales and merchandising, for Albertsons' California Division. She previously held executive positions with Safeway, including senior vice president of marketing for that company's Vons banner in Southern California.
BIG Y ELEVATES THREE TO DIRECTOR POSITIONS
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y Foods here last week said it has promoted three individuals to director posts. John W. Jendza has been named director of store design and purchasing, reporting to Peter J. Thomas, vice president of real estate and development. Jendza, a 34-year veteran of Big Y, most recently was manager of store design and purchasing. James Kacmarcik was named director of risk management, reporting to Michael S. Gold, vice president of legal affairs and government relations. Kacmarcik joined Big Y in 1995 and has been risk manager since 2003. Also, Casimir M. Tryba was named director of food safety, also reporting to Gold. A former city health inspector, Tryba instituted a food safety certification program for all of Big Y's store and perishables department managers. He is past chairman of the international Food Marketing Institute's Food Protection Committee.
