NEW YORK — Family Dollar Stores intends to increase its assortments of frozen and refrigerated products as a result of its partnership with McLane Co., though it hasn’t determined how much selection will grow, Michael K. Bloom, president and chief operating officer, told investors here Wednesday.

“The SKU count is going to go up fairly significantly” to offer broader varieties, he said.

The company’s partnership with McLane, which becomes official in mid-September, will enable Family Dollar to choose from the 40,000 SKUs the distributor carries, Bloom added. Despite making strides in its consumables assortment over the last five years, he said the company is still “tremendously behind” in selection.

“We have gone to battle with one arm tied behind our back because we didn’t have the assortment we thought we needed to really capture the complete trip,” Bloom explained.

To help give consumables room to expand, the company has moved food and HBC to opposite sides of the store in its newest prototype.
