PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle here could still end up buying a beverage bottling plant in Latrobe, Pa., after a bankruptcy court last week awarded the bid to Cadbury Schweppes, according to reports. Giant Eagle had bid $20 million for the facility, vs. Cadbury’s $19 million, but was found to have intimidated Cadbury from making a higher offer and was thus eliminated from the bidding process and ordered to forfeit its $2 million deposit. Cadbury was ordered to follow through with its original bid and acquire the plant for $19 million, but local reports said Cadbury might end up selling the plant to Giant Eagle after all. Giant Eagle could not be reached for comment on Friday. The plant is owned by LeNature’s, a beverage company that went bankrupt last year amid a financial scandal and owes $820 million to creditors.
