Giant Eagle launches 2nd ‘Price Lock’ promo this year
The regional grocer’s value-focused effort earlier this summer was a significant traffic driver, the retailer said.
Giant Eagle’s first “Price Lock” promotion earlier this summer was such a successful traffic driver, the regional grocer is offering an expanded list of value-focused items this fall, with a promised average savings of 15%, the retailer announced Thursday.
The initial promotion, which ran from May 4 until Wednesday, included 800 products. But this new version, which runs until Nov. 11, will offer savings on 1,000 products, many of them seasonal and geared toward Labor Day and Halloween celebrations. The expanded list of products will be available at all Giant Eagle and Market district locations, and 20 popular items will be “price locked” at the retailer’s GetGo convenience stores.
“Price Lock proved to be an important driver of value for our guests, and we’re excited to continue it into the fall,” Giant Eagle Interim CEO Bill Artman said in a statement. “Combined with other savings opportunities offered across our supermarket and GetGo locations over the past four months, we believe we’re delivering on our promise to provide reliable value to our guests every day.”
Discounted items include burgers, bratwurst, shrimp, holiday-themed candy and many others listed in the retailer’s printed and digital weekly circulars, Giant Eagle said. “Price Lock” will also be promoted through in-store and in-market marketing.
Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle has launched several promotions in recent months in addition to Price Lock, such as discounted doughnuts on National Doughnut Day, discounted gas for loyalty members during Independence Day weekend, and 99-cent store-brand ice cream tubs on National Ice Cream Day. All of the efforts netted increased sales and, for the gas promo, a doubling of the number of shoppers enrolling in the myPerks Pay Direct program, Giant Eagle said.
“The company will build on the success of these promotions by launching similar efforts in the coming weeks and months,” the company said in a statement.
Shoppers continue to seek out grocery discounts, even as food price inflation moderates. Grocery prices ticked up slightly in July but remained more than half of what they were at their inflationary peak a year ago, according to updated Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released Thursday.
Giant Eagle operates more than 470 stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, northern West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana.
