HOUSTON — Grocers Supply Co. here said last week it plans to open a full-scale distribution center in Dallas, which will enable it to potentially expand its distribution.

The company serves 800 customers in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, and the new facility “will make it more economical to push into more markets that are closer to Dallas, like Oklahoma and parts of Arkansas and Northern Texas,” Dave D’Arezzo, chief operating officer for the $3 billion wholesaler, told SN.

“Also, our business in the Dallas area is continuing to grow, and we’ve reached the tipping point and need additional capacity.

“It’s also more economical to work from a full distribution center than the depot we operate in Irving, Texas, where we drop off merchandise that is then delivered in separate trucks to our customers.”

The company is scheduled to break ground on the 500,000-square-foot distribution center in Dallas by Labor Day and hopes to open it in early 2015, D’Arezzo said.

The distribution center, which will be located on a 129-acre lot, could someday be expanded to 750,000 square feet, D’Arezzo noted.

GSC operates 13 facilities here, including its primary dry grocery warehouse; separate warehouses for frozen foods, produce, meat and banana-ripening; and several dry grocery satellite warehouses.

Besides the depot in Irving, Texas, it has a depot in Harlingen, Texas, on the Mexican border.

GSC distributes outside the U.S. to countries in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, D’Arezzo said.
