In an exclusive interview with SN late last month, Hepfinger pledged to work toward improving store conditions and customer focus at Weis, a $2.3 billion retailer that operates 155 stores in five states. He said his goal is to make the retailer “best-in-class in all the areas in which we compete.”

Hepfinger, 50, began his food retailing career working as a dairy clerk at a Weis-owned Albany Public store as a teenager. He later joined Schenectady, N.Y.-based Price Chopper and for 16 years was a member of its executive committee, most recently in the role of executive vice president of retailing and administration.
