LAKELAND, Fla. — Charlie Jenkins Jr. will retire from his role as chief executive officer at Publix Super Markets on March 29, 2008, the retailer here said Wednesday. Ed Crenshaw, currently Publix’s president, will assume CEO duties at that time, and Todd Jones, currently senior vice president of product business development, will assume Crenshaw’s role as president. Jenkins, who served as CEO since 2001, will remain a member of the retailer’s board of directors, and take over as chairman of the board effective March 30. Howard Jenkins, the current chairman, will become chairman of the executive committee, Publix said. Charlie Jenkins’ decision to step down was prompted by his desire to retire at age 65, Maria Brous, a spokeswoman for Publix, told SN. Jenkins, 64, is a nephew of company founder George Jenkins, and Crenshaw, 56, is a grandson of the founder. Jones, 45, who started his career at Publix as service clerk in 1980, is not related to the founding family, Brous said.
