Kroger to Expand in Hampton Roads: Report

CINCINNATI — Kroger here said it would build 10 new stores in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia over the next five years, including the region’s first Kroger Marketplace superstore, local reports said Friday.

CINCINNATI — Kroger Co. here said it would build 10 new stores in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia over the next five years, including the region’s first Kroger Marketplace superstore, local reports said Friday.

The company made the announcement during a press event announcing the construction of a 124,000-square-foot Marketplace store at a former Kmart site in Virginia Beach, according to the Daily Press, Newport News, Va. That store is set to open next summer and will be the second Marketplace store in Virginia. Kroger said the expansion would come at a rate of two new stores a year for five years and represent an investment of $250 million in the market.

Kroger officials were not immediately available for further comment.
