CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant-Carlisle here said Monday that it would close a Martin’s store at the Gayton Crossing shopping center in Richmond, Va., on or before Oct. 26.

The store, which Ahold-owned Giant acquired as part of its 2010 Ukrop’s acquisition, would be the first former Ukrop’s store to close since Ahold took the chain over.

“This difficult decision comes out of our ongoing and continual assessment of our stores,” Rick Herring, president, of Giant and Martin’s, said in a statement. “Our Gayton Crossing location has not achieved performance goals after several years of operation. We thank and deeply appreciate the dedicated service of our associates at the Gayton Crossing store.”

Ahold operates 23 Martin’s stores in Richmond and plans to open a new store in Midlothian, Va. next year. The company said a majority of the fewer than 100 workers at the Gayton Crossing store would be offered positions at nearby stores.
