The award, which Metro described as “the industry’s highest honor," is given to individuals who, “through their professional dedication, have made a significant and outstanding contribution to the food industry.” From among about 50 to 70 nominations per year, the selection is made based on professional dedication as well as the importance and value of the contribution made to the Canadian food industry.

The award was presented last week before a roomful of over 500 people who had gathered at the Fairmount Royal York Hotel in Toronto to attend the annual ceremony.
The Golden Pencil Award was first presented in 1957 by The Food Industry Association of Canada and initially intended to mark the common efforts made by suppliers and retailers in developing and improving the Canadian food industry. The symbol used for the Award is a “Golden Pencil,” illustrating the transaction between supplier and retailer with the stroke of a pen.
