VANCOUVER, B.C. — Safeway Canada said it has reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract covering about 6,600 workers in British Columbia.
United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1518, in a statement on its website, said its negotiating committee is recommending that its members accept the offer. Detailers of the proposed contract are being distributed to members but have not been disclosed to the public.
The two sides had been negotiating since December 11. During negotiations, Safeway expressed concern about “the economy, cross-border shopping, and the ongoing impact of low-paying grocery retailers and competition” moving into the market, the union said.
Safeway Canada negotiates independently with UFCW Local 247 and the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union Local 468, which represent the remainder of its retail employees in the province.
