The stores, located in the New Hampshire towns of Seabrook, Goffstown, Manchester, Tilton, West Lebanon and Keene, were not profitable, Shaw’s said.

“As a company and as responsible business owners, it is imperative to the overall health and future of the company that we run profitable stores,” Shaw’s said in a statement. “The stores identified have not been profitable for quite some time, and despite the best efforts of the company and our associates — including recent pricing and marketing initiatives — we have not been able to reposition them to better compete in the marketplace and don’t anticipate being able to change this trend.”

Shaw’s earlier this month announced six store closings in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, but said Tuesday it had no plans to announce additional closings.

“While we continuously evaluate the viability of our stores, we do not have any current plans to close any additional stores at this time. This is not reflective of the overall health of Shaw’s and Star Market,” the company said. “The company has, and will, continue to make investments into our business as we look to regain our position as the preeminent grocer in New England. Part of that is making the difficult, but necessary decisions like closing stores to ensure the long-term viability of Shaw’s and Star Market.”

Including the 12 stores marked for closing this month, Shaw’s operated 169 stores, including 33 in New Hampshire.
