KEASBEY, N.J. — ShopRite has signed a lease for a 90,000-square-foot store to anchor the developing second phase of Brooklyn’s Gateway Center shopping complex, company officials said.

As SN reported last year, ShopRite was chosen to locate in the 600,000-square-foot development over Wal-Mart Stores, which had eyed the same site for its first New York City store but was unable to come to terms with the landlord. The ShopRite will be operated by an affiliate of Glass Gardens, a member of the Wakefern Food Corp. cooperative that operates nine other ShopRite stores, including one in Brooklyn.

The store, which would be ShopRite’s largest in the tri-state area (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut), is set for completion in the fall of 2014 and is expected to employ 300 workers.

Gateway Center is located in Southeast Brooklyn near East New York. The 650,000-square-foot first phase of the project, opened in 2002, includes BJ’s Wholesale Club. Developers said phase II of the project will include 600,000 new square feet of retail space.
