LANDOVER, Md. -- A144,000-square-foot Wal-Mart store -- the retailer's first outlet to be located inside the Capital Beltway surrounding Washington, D.C. -- opened here Thursday. The store is considered important strategically for the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer, which is attempting to build a greater presence in urban settings. The store is one of 10 designated “Jobs and Opportunity Zone” stores that will partner and promote with area businesses, and will feature product selections tailored to the neighborhood and a sustainable design, Wal-Mart said in a statement. The store initially was scheduled to open Wednesday but encountered last-minute permit problems, reports said.
