BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores here said yesterday it was making a $600,000 grant to World Vision to aid economic recovery in the flooded Tabasco-Chiapas region of Mexico. Wal-Mart said its Mexican subsidiary, Wal-Mart de Mexico, is working to leverage the donation through a matching grant from the United Nations Development Program in Mexico, bringing the total amount of relief funds for flood victims to $1.2 million. The company said the donations are designed to boost the local economies of the region by giving small loans to home-based businesses for vegetable and cash crops; reducing migration by strengthening local entrepreneurial capabilities; and creating regional trade networks to allow local cooperatives and businesses access to financial aid and markets for their products and services.
