One of Wal-Mart Stores’ first regional shopping mall sites will be closing in March, company officials said Monday.

The Walmart at the Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, N.Y., will close March 6, officials said, citing an expiring lease and a layout that limited the retailer’s ability to enhance food offerings there.

“The shopping habits of our customers are constantly evolving, and as a company we are moving toward offering grocery and food, as well as general merchandise, as part of the overall shopping experience,” Bill Wertz, a spokesman for Walmart, told SN. The store opened in May of 2013 in a former Sterns department store space at Sunrise, a regional mall.

Approximately 300 full-time and part-time associates have been notified of the closing and all will be eligible to apply for positions at area Walmart stores, Wertz said. Eligible associates who are unable to find positions at other area Walmart stores may receive severance benefits. The store is the only Walmart in the area closing. The Bentonville, Ark., company operates supercenters in Farmingdale, East Meadow and Uniondale and a Neighborhood Market store in Levittown.
