ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets here announced this week that it was named one of the world’s most ethical companies by Ethisphere Magazine, a publication covering the correlation between ethics and profit. “We are so grateful to be included on this list because it recognizes the importance of values,” Chief Executive Officer Danny Wegman said. “Caring, respect, empowerment, high standards and making a difference in the community are values that we try to live everyday at Wegmans.” Wegmans was one of 92 companies on the list; others were Whole Food Markets, Costco Wholesale, Target, Marks & Spencer, Aldi Group, AEON, Otto GmbH and IKEA. The selection process included reviewing companies’ codes of ethics, litigation and regulatory infraction histories; evaluating investment in innovation and sustainable business practices; looking at companies’ activities to improve corporate citizenship; studying nominations from senior executives, industry peers, suppliers and customers; and working with consumer action groups for feedback and rating.
