NEW YORK -- Wegmans Food Markets rated No. 3 on this year's Fortune list of the top 100 companies in America to work for, and Whole Foods Market moved up into the top 10. Privately owned Wegmans, Rochester, N.Y., was ranked No. 1 two years ago and No. 2 last year, and has a voluntary turnover rate of 7%, the magazine reported. Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods moved up from No. 15 last year, and was cited for its cap on executive salaries -- 19 times average full-time pay -- and the decision by John Mackey, chairman and chief executive officer, to cut his salary to $1. Three other supermarket chains made the list, all of which also were on it last year: Nugget Market, Woodland, Calif., No. 13 (up from No. 33); Stew Leonard's, Norwalk, Conn., No. 51 (up from No. 58); and Publix Super Markets, No. 57 (down from No. 56). Fortune Magazine here published the list yesterday. Internet tool creator Google, Mountain View, Calif., was ranked No. 1, followed by biotechnology company Genentech, South San Francisco, Calif.
