SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Price Chopper here is filling holes once occupied by nearly 100 peanut-containing products with shelf signs indicating the items are part of the Peanut Corporation of America recall. To date, 2,396 products have been pulled from distribution because they carry the risk of salmonella contamination.
“We’re not filling that space with alternate product, since there are other options in those categories for consumers to choose from,” chain spokeswoman Mona Golub told SN. Snack bars and cheese-and-cracker selections have been most affected, she added.
Price Chopper is also communicating with shoppers through SmartReply, a system that distributes prerecorded phone messages to AdvantEdge cardholders who have purchased store-brand products that have been recalled. Price Chopper is not contacting shoppers who have purchased recalled national brands.
The messages are customized to include the name, brand, size and code number of relevant products. Calls have been placed to 18,000 AdvantEdge cardholding households who have purchased at least one of eight private-label items that have been recalled. Price Chopper has removed 86 national-brand items from its shelves.
“We feel that information related to recalled national brands has been pretty well disseminated, so we’ve reached out to consumers of brands that are unique to our stores,” Golub said.
