The Speedway integration leads to operational, field, support staff consolidation, the retailer confirms.

7-Eleven Inc. has laid off nearly 900 members of its corporate, field and support staff, CSP has confirmed after first reporting about the staff reductions on July 21. The convenience-store retailer cited the acquisition and integration of the Speedway chain as the reason for the cuts.

“We are just over a year into our integration process following the $21 billion Speedway acquisition and have made significant progress. As with any integration, our approach includes assessing our combined organization structure. The review was slowed by COVID-19 but is now complete, and we are finalizing the go-forward organization structure,” a spokesperson said in an updated statement provided to CSP.

“As a result, we made the difficult decision to reduce our current workforce in our Irving, Texas, and Enon, Ohio, support centers and field support operations by approximately 880 associates,” 7-Eleven said. “These decisions have not been made lightly, and we are working to support impacted employees, including providing career transition services.”

7-Eleven completed the acquisition of the Speedway gas station and convenience-store chain from Marathon Petroleum Corp., Findlay, Ohio, in May 2021. The portfolio included approximately 3,800 stores located in 36 states. The deal was the biggest in the history of the convenience-store sector. 7-Eleven and Marathon Petroleum agreed to divest 293 convenience stores in local markets across 20 states to settle Federal Trade Commission (FTC) antitrust concerns.

In October 2021, 7-Eleven laid off approximately 35 people at Speedway’s headquarters in Enon, Ohio, as part of the company’s process of integrating the two c-store staffs, networks and brands.

Irving, Texas-based 7-Eleven operates, franchises or licenses more than 77,700 stores in 19 countries and regions, including about 13,000 in the United States, including approximately 9,500 under the 7-Eleven banner, around 3,800 under the Speedway banner and about 500 under the Stripes flag, as well as the Laredo Taco Company and Raise the Roost Chicken and Biscuits brands.
