Aldi is in a New York state of mind—at least when it comes to new store openings.

On Thursday, the discount grocer will open its second store in Williamsville, New York, a Buffalo suburb. Aldi now operates over 120 locations throughout the Empire State, according to the grocery retailer’s website.

Located in Erie County at 5435 Sheridan Drive, the store will host a grand opening at 8:30 a.m. During the opening weekend, shoppers can enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a $500 ALDI gift card, the company announced in a statement.

Last Thursday, the Batavia, Illinois-based grocery chain continued its expansion in the Northeast with the opening of a new store in Troy, New York, north of the state capital of Albany.

“Our stores are designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier, and we’ve been voted the price leader for six years running,” said Aaron Sumida, Tully regional VP for ALDI. “We have served this community for more than 24 years and are excited to continue to offer Williamsville residents an affordable way of shopping.”

The new New York locations are part of the company’s nationwide growth plan, which has seen more than 1,000 new Aldi store openings throughout the U.S. over the past decade. Aldi, which operates more than 2,200 stores across 38 states, opened and remodeled 139 locations in 2022, the company told WGB.

The no-frills German discount grocery chain is eyeing other parts of New York as part of its growth plan, including its first store in Staten Island, the southernmost of New York City's five boroughs, later this year.

“We are excited to confirm we are planning to open our first Aldi store on Staten Island but do not have further details at this time. We will reach back out once we have more specific details,” Chris Daniels, South Windsor Division VP at Aldi, confirmed in an email statement last year to WGB.

Founded in 1961, Aldi last month took the top spot in new grocery store openings, according to those tracked by WGB.
