An Amazon Fresh opened April 7 in Fairfax, Va., and it is the first Fresh location in the area to offer Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, which also debuted at a Whole Foods for the first time earlier this year and allows shoppers using Amazon One, a credit or debit card, or an in-store QR code in the Amazon app to skip the checkout line.

“We’re thrilled Amazon has decided to bring this technology to Fairfax—a city that embraces innovation and technology—for the benefit of our residents, office workers and visitors,” Fairfax Mayor David Meyer said in a news release.

The Fairfax Amazon Fresh, 10360 Fairfax Blvd., is the second for Virginia, and in a release announcing its grand opening, Amazon said it is now hiring to fill hundreds of positions for three additional Fresh locations in the Northern Virginia area. The stores will be located in Lorton, Manassas and Arlington, and will offer starting wages of at least $15.50 to $17.50 per hour depending on the role and shift, Amazon said.

In addition to the Just Walk Out tech, the Fairfax Fresh, which measures about 30,000 square feet, offers a wide assortment of national brands, 365 by Whole Foods Market organics, produce, meat and seafood, as well as a range of prepared foods—including breads, made-to-order pizzas, rotisserie chickens and hot sandwiches—made fresh in-store every day. The store also offers local brands such as Mason Dixie Biscuits, Bread Furst Bakery and Taharka Brothers Ice Cream; regional favorites such as Duke’s Mayo, Ellenos Yogurt and Boston Chowda; and Amazon-exclusive brands such as Aplenty and Cursive.

The Fairfax Fresh will also help support the surrounding area by donating eligible unsold food from the store to local food banks, including the Capital Area Food Bank. “With rates of need still extremely elevated in our region, having new sources of high-quality food for the neighbors we serve has never been more important,” said Radha Muthiah, president and CEO of the Capital Area Food Bank.
