Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Markets in downtown Mt. Prospect, Illinois, is now open for business.

The new store, which opened Wednesday in the Chicago suburb, is located at 207 S. Maple St. and occupies the ground-level retail space of the Maple Street Lofts 192-unit apartment development. And with the day’s warm weather, eager shoppers were on hand to check out the grocery retailer’s ninth location.

The new urban neighborhood market is a smaller-scale location for the family-owned grocery retailer.

“The store is 15,000 square feet, which is a new concept for us,” Robertino Presta Jr., who is the third generation of founder, Angelo Caputo, told WGB at the store’s grand opening. “We are trying to get back to our roots with the smaller footprint—to use the technologies of today along with a healthy mix of the old and new.”

The new store features groceries in all departments, along with Caputo’s signature imports and from-scratch bakery items, gelato and an outdoor seating for shoppers.

The store also features a wide selection of foodservice items such as hot foods like pizza and soups, as well as sushi and sandwiches. The market also includes a European-style bar offering liquor and coffee.

Supply-chain issues, particularly dealing with refrigeration, have made opening the store a multi-year challenge. “I have emails going back to 2017 on this location,” Presta Jr., said.

The Mt. Prospect store isn’t the only Caputo’s that faced supply chain issues, prompting delays in grand openings, he noted. The grocery retailer is also readying to open at 4400 North Harlem Ave. in the village of Norridge, an enclave within the city of Chicago.

“Our Norridge store is set to open next month if we get the refrigeration parts,” he told WGB. The 40,000-square-foot location will be the grocery retailer’s 10th store.

Fully owned and operated by the Angelo Caputo family since 1958, the independent grocery retailer currently operates nine locations throughout Chicagoland.
