After recently resuming its growth plans, BJ’s Wholesale Club this week announced plans to open two new club stores in New York in early 2021.

The locations in Long Island City and Newburgh will mark the 220th and 221st locations for the Westborough, Mass.-based warehouse club operator—and the 44th and 45th locations in New York. BJ’s will also open a BJ’s Gas location in Newburgh.

“We’re thrilled to expand our presence in New York and bring outstanding value and savings to families in Long Island City and Newburgh,” said Lee Delaney, president and CEO of BJ’s. “BJ’s brings a fresh approach to the wholesale club experience by providing our members with outstanding value and convenience on everything they need for their family. We look forward to opening our two new clubs and BJ’s Gas location and continue our growth as a company.”

Each club is expected to bring about 300 jobs. BJ’s club in Long Island City will be located at 34-60 48th Street, taking over a space in a largely vacant shopping center that once hosted a Toys ’R Us, National Wholesale Liquidators and Modell’s, among others. Those three retailers have all closed in recent years due to bankruptcies. The site is across the street from a Stop & Shop store, a block away from Food Bazaar, and could compete for club shoppers with a high-volume Costco less than two miles away. The opening could also potentially ease some congestion at BJ’s popular unit in the Ridgewood neighborhood.

The Newburgh club will be located at 401 Auto Park Place in Orange County.

BJ’s said both locations would feature an extensive selection of fresh foods, a full-service deli and household essentials such as paper products, cleaning products, diapers, pet supplies and more. The clubs will also offer the treasure-hunt experience BJ’s is known for, with an assortment of fashion, seasonal items, toys, tech and local products.
