Fareway completes plans for new store in Norwalk, Iowa

Fareway Stores plans to build a 24,000-square-foot full-service, neighborhood grocery store in Norwalk, Iowa.

The new store will be located at the northeast corner of Highway 28 and Chatham Drive in Norwalk as part of Norwalk Central, a mixed-use development area that stretches between Beardsley Street to High Road along the east side of Sunset Drive and Highway 28. 

The grocer will close on the property this week with construction to begin in the spring of next year, followed by an opening date in early 2024, the Boone, Iowa-based retailer announced Friday. The existing Norwalk Fareway store located at 1711 Sunset Drive will close once the new store is completed.

The updated shopping experience, with fresh and unique aesthetics, will allow us to grow with the great community of Norwalk,” said Fareway CEO Reynolds W. Cramer, in a statement. “We want to thank city officials for their commitment to Fareway and for their hard work in making this project possible.”

The new Fareway will feature the Midwest grocer’s fresh, high-quality meat, which it touts as “second-to-none,” with a full-service butcher counter, produce, competitive prices and to-your-car carryout. The new store will offer Fareway’s FastLanes, a self-service checkout option, and online shopping and curbside pick-up, the grocer said.

It's been a pleasure working with the leadership at Fareway in the development of this modern and exciting new facility,” said Norwalk Economic Development Director Hollie Zajicek in a statement.

Fareway, which is a family-owned business, has 133 stores in seven states. The Midwest grocer also operates stand-alone meat markets and recently opened its first Fareway Meat Market in Minnesota.
