Boone, Iowa-based grocer Fareway Stores has opened its sixth Nebraska store, welcoming in shoppers at 604 S. Highway 6 in Gretna, Neb., as of March 30, the company said in a statement.

“We look forward to continued expansion in Nebraska and serving the needs of area residents in the growing community of Gretna,” Fareway CEO Reynolds Cramer said in a statement. “We want to thank the community and stakeholders for their support in making this project possible and welcoming Fareway as an integral part of the community.”

The company said the 21,000-square-foot store boasts a full-service butcher counter offering "second-to-none" meat; farm-fresh produce; low, competitive prices; and customer service that includes to-your-car carryout. The grocery retailer said Gretna is the company's first brick-and-mortar with a deli operation, which will feature pre-made sandwiches or specialty sandwiches made daily.

Local officials welcomed the news and said they see the store as a great fit for the community. “As Gretna continues to grow, it’s important that we keep a sense of community and the quality of life for which we are well-known,” Gretna Mayor Mike Evans said in a statement. “Not only (does Fareway) provide quality products, services, and career opportunities, but their focus on family values, honesty and developing relationships with its customers, employees and suppliers make them a great fit for Gretna.”

The new store will be led by grocery manager Charles Driscoll and market manager Josh Tye.

The location will offer FastLane, a self-service checkout option, as well as online shopping and curbside pickup, available through Shop.Fareway.com.

Last month, Fareway announced that through a partnership with Blackhawk Network, customers can now use PayPal and Venmo to pay for in-store purchases at the grocer’s 129 locations.

“This new technology expands on Fareway’s commitment to provide the best in customer service, with personalized and efficient options for our customers,” Mike McCormick, chief retail officer for Fareway, said at the time. “With the rise in demand for mobile payments and digital options, we’re confident that our partnership with Blackhawk and PayPal will be positive for both customers and our company.”

Looking ahead, the company said the following communities also will soon welcome new Fareway stores:

  • Des Moines, Iowa (Beaverdale) – Des Moines’ first Fareway Meat Market will open in May 2022.

  • Olathe, Kan. – Fareway’s first development in Kansas—and the seventh state for the retailer—is a 7,400-square-foot Fareway Meat Market that will open in June and be connected to a liquor store. The Meat Market concept originates from Fareway’s more-than-80-year commitment to providing the best in fresh, high-quality meat, the company said.
