Retailer-owned grocery co-op Allegiance Retail Services now includes five Green Way Markets in the New York tri-state area, according to the supermarket banner's website.
The latest Green Way Market store, which opened last month, is located at 825 Dekalb Avenue in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The 8,000-square-foot store features the banner’s signature “a better shopping experience,” with a focus on fresh, natural, organic and gluten-free items as well as grocery essentials.
The new location is owned and operated by Rowhie Said, who designed and built the grocery store from the ground up, Allegiance Retail Services said in a statement.
A lifelong grocer, Said has managed his family’s grocery stores in the Flatbush and Prospect Park areas of Brooklyn. He explained that when it came time to choose the location for the new Green Way Market, Dekalb Avenue provided the needed size to carry a high-quality store.
“Green Way Markets is a modern-day supermarket banner perfect for the neighborhood, which is in the midst of gentrification,” Said said in a statement. “We are offering a broad range of lines at affordable price points to accommodate the purchasing needs of all our customers. We are especially excited about the extensive selection of organic and natural lines of produce.”
The store, which is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Sunday, is part of the co-op’s growth in the New York metropolitan area.
“We are proud to support the growth of our members as they open new stores and banners,” said John T. Derderian, president and chief operating officer of Allegiance Retail Services. “Independent, family-owned markets are essential in catering to the tastes and needs of particular neighborhoods, especially in the New York City area, where cultures and demographics can vary within blocks of one another.”
Last November, New York-based Morton Williams Supermarkets, which has 16 upscale grocery stores, joined Allegiance Retail Services. Avi Kaner, a Morton Williams owner, was unanimously elected to Allegiance’s board of directors.
Allegiance Retail Services Inc. is the marketing and merchandising cooperative for New York-area supermarkets such as Foodtown, Freshtown, D’Agostino, Gristedes, Pathmark, LaBella Marketplace, Brooklyn Harvest, Market Fresh, Morton Williams, Big Deal Food Market, Green Way Markets and Shop n Bag.
