Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Dollar General and Allegiance Retail Services have joined the rapidly growing movement to switch to a cage-free egg supply.

Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, an extreme-value grocery retailer, is working with suppliers to source 100 percent cage-free eggs for all of its locations by 2025, based on available supply.

"Many Grocery Outlet stores serve underserved populations who regularly experience food insecurity. Our first obligation is to these customers and we are committed to providing them wholesome, quality food in the most cost-effective manner," says Eric Lindberg, co-CEO. "However, animal welfare is extremely important to us, and that's why Grocery Outlet is setting a goal of working with its suppliers to transition to cage-free eggs by 2025."

Grocery Outlet will support the 2025 goal in partnership with its suppliers to provide customers with a safe, abundant supply along with prices that remain affordable and accessible.

Dollar General has also committed to transition to 100 percent cage-free in-shell eggs by 2025, based on available supply, affordability and customer demand. Dollar General will work with its suppliers to implement this change in a way that ensures fresh, affordable in-shell eggs continue to be readily available to Dollar General shoppers throughout the country.

"We are closely watching what is happening in the egg production industry and the marketplace and are optimistic with the passage of time, the price of cage-free in-shell eggs will gradually decline so that cage-free eggs become a viable, equally affordable option for our core customers," the company said in a statement.

Allegiance Retail Services will work towards its goal to source 100 percent cage-free eggs by 2022. Allegiance has also committed that their proprietary Greenway natural/organic private label brand will be 100 percent cage-free by the summer of 2016 and available in all of its member stores.

Allegiance Retail Services, LLC supports independent supermarkets (e.g., Foodtown, Freshtown, Freshco, D’Agostino, LaBella Marketplace, Brooklyn Harvest, Market Fresh, Big Deal Food Market and Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace) for retail success by providing them with marketing, advertising, technological and merchandising support, as well as a full line of Foodtown private label products.

Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Dollar General and Allegiance Retail Services joins retailers like 7-Eleven, Woodman’s Markets, C&S Wholesale Grocers, Tops, H-E-B, Alex Lee, SpartanNash, Gelson's Markets, Brookshire Grocery Company, Walmart, Meijer, Raley's, Weis Markets, Ingles Markets, Bashas’ Supermarkets, Supervalu, Kroger and Kings Food Markets who have made the commitment to cage-free egg supplies.
