Emeryville, Calif.-based Grocery Outlet announced its latest East Coast expansion, with the opening of a new store in Maryland. Located at 1713 Massey Blvd. in Hagerstown, Md., the store marks the extreme-value grocer's entrance into its eighth state.

Grocery Outlet, which reported strong traffic trends for the second quarter, said the Maryland location will create nearly 25 new jobs in the community. The grocer, which offers the same trusted brands as traditional grocery stores but at lower prices, said its buyers “scour the country to find the top manufacturers with excess inventory and seasonal closeouts so Grocery Outlet can offer ‘wow savings’ on thousands of name-brand products,” the retailer said in a statement.

Hagerstown Grocery Outlet independent operators Gerald and Evelyn Eldred said, “We are overjoyed to open Grocery Outlet’s very first location in Maryland and to be a part of the Hagerstown community, providing big savings on quality groceries. This partnership with Grocery Outlet gives us the ability to grow our business, create new jobs and, more importantly, give back to our local community.”

The Eldreds presented a $1,000 donation to The Hope Center Hagerstown, a shelter in the community founded in 1955. Grocery Outlet said the independent operators also presented a $1,000 donation to LifeHouse Church, "with the purpose of reaching people with God's love and message of hope.”

In celebration of the ribbon-cutting opening ceremony, the retailer said now through July 14, shoppers may enter for a chance to win $1,000 in groceries, valid only at the Hagerstown Grocery Outlet location.

A third-generation, family-led company founded in 1946, Grocery Outlet has locations throughout California, Idaho, New Jersey, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington and now Maryland. Owned by independent operators based in the communities they serve, Grocery Outlet offers fresh produce, meat, deli and dairy.
