CHICAGO -- In an effort to help retailers reduce employee turnover, IGA here has launched an online training certification program for grocery stockers, courtesy clerks and cashiers.

ibilities for each position, said IGA. Applications reinforce correct responses, and direct students to areas in which more study is needed.

The certification program is an extension of the IGA Institute, which came into "full fruition" this month, said IGA (see www.igainstitute.com). The online program "allows study at home or at the store, and always at their own pace," said Paulo Goelzer, president of IGA Institute. "They can log on and off at will, and never lose data."

In addition, he noted, "as soon as new information is ready, the site is instantly updated, overcoming the problem of outdated CD-ROMs or printed manuals."

Upon scoring 80% or higher on a course exam, students earn a specialized certificate of achievement. "These courses are designed to give employees the credentials required to perform in many levels of the store," Goelzer said. "Eventually, associates will be able to become certified in every position, all the way up to store manager.

"The certificates become concrete proof of your associates' competencies and their merits for promotion. Web-based training is a valuable way to empower your management and associates."

The IGA Institute also offers in-person classes. A class on supermarket operations, scheduled for March 7 to 13 at Hussman Training Center, St. Louis, has been sold out.
