Jet.com will open a new distribution facility in the Bronx, a borough of New York City, this fall that will provide same-day and next-day delivery of groceries in the New York metro area.

Officials said the opening of the Bronx fulfillment center “marks an important milestone as Jet.com continues building momentum with urban consumers across major metropolitan markets, including New York, to enhance online shopping through a unique assortment, tailored experience and personal service.”

Jet was said to have leased the 200,000-square-foot facility at 1055 Bronx River Ave. this spring but did not publicly comment until this week. The expansion is helping parent company Walmart penetrate the New York market for the first time after years of efforts to expand its flagship brand fell short. The Bronx fulfillment center will also leverage Parcel to support its last-mile delivery out of this location. Walmart acquired Parcel last year.

Jet’s offering competes with a number of e-commerce delivery providers serving the five boroughs, including FreshDirect, Amazon Fresh and Ahold Delhaize’s Peapod.

Simon Belsham, Jet’s newly named president, said the company’s grocery offering would be built around pantry essentials, in-season fresh foods and specialty and local offerings. Jet said it would continue to work with local and iconic New York brands through its NY Favorites Shop offering an assortment from Big Gay Ice Cream, Roberta’s, The Meatball Shop and more.
