Jimbo’s, a San Diego-based natural grocer with four locations in Southern California, is growing.

The grocery retailer is slated to open its newest store in Mission Valley, California, in San Diego County, but work won't start on the market until 2025, with a planned opening the following year.

“We are happy to announce the signing of the lease to open a Jimbo’s in Mission Valley at Civita! While the 25,000-square-foot store will probably not open until 2026, we have already begun our design work. We will continue to update you on our progress!” Jimbo’s recently tweeted.

The natural foods market will be built at the corner of Civita Boulevard and Qualcomm Way as part of a mixed-use community development, according to Sudberry Properties. Construction for the new Jimbo’s will start in early 2025. The West Coast grocer’s new location will be part of the 230-acre site, formerly a 70-year-old sand-and-gravel quarry and will feature nearby access to San Diego’s light rail.

Founded in 1984 by Jim “Jimbo” Someck, Jimbo’s avoids any products with white sugar, "harmful" chemicals or preservatives, and sells organic items whenever possible. A native New Yorker, Someck came to San Diego over 40 years ago and started in the health food business.

In 2019, the grocery retailer opened in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center in San Diego, which was touted by officials to be the first plastic-free water aisle on the West Coast, thanks to its refillable water station.

Jimbo’s other stores, all in California, are located in the 4S Commons Town Center in San Diego, The Forum Shopping Center in Carlsbad, and South Center City Parkway and Felicita Road in Escondido.
