TROY, Mich. -- Kmart Corp. here said it plans to test a new format -- a gas station with convenience items called Kmart Express -- on the parking lots at four stores this year.

outh Haven, Miss. -- and possibly at two additional locations -- so the company can evaluate the concept, a Kmart spokesman told SN last week.

Kmart Express units will include gas pumps outside a small building, inside of which the company will sell automotive supplies, primarily oil, plus snacks, beverages and other very basic convenience items, the spokesman said.

The company has not determined how long the evaluation period will last or what sort of rollout might follow. "The plans for Kmart Express originated under Floyd Hall [former chairman and chief executive officer], but now that he's retired, things could change," the spokesman said.
