Market Basket on Friday will open its third and largest Concord, New Hampshire store—which prompted thousands of social media likes from loyal fans of the retailer responding to the long-awaited update.

The Tewksbury, Massachusetts-based operator’s new 81,000-square-foot store will be located at 15 Merchants Way in Concord.

The opening expands the 105-year-old Demoulas Super Markets footprint, which operates 87 Market Basket stores in four New England states. The grocery retailer, known for high-volume stores, service and low prices, also has two Market Basket stores currently under construction in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and North Conway, New Hampshire, the company said in a statement.

“We are pleased to share with our customers an exciting store to shop, with the freshest seafood and produce to select from," David McLean, operations manager for Demoulas Super Markets, said in an email to WGB.

Wedded to tradition, Market Basket, which is a full-service supermarket with no self-checkout, prides itself on “just people taking care of people.”  In fact, with human relationships at its business core, it wasn't until 2017 that the company went digital.

The new store will feature Market Basket’s signature departments as well as a Market’s Kitchen, Market’s Café, Niji Sushi, and a butcher block. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Earlier this year, market analyst Dunnhumby reported in its fifth-annual Retailer Preference Index (RPI) that Market Basket moved up from No. 6 in 2020 to No. 3 for 2021. Market Basket ranked above Trader Joe’s, which fell four spots from No. 3 in the 2020 index to No. 7 in 2021. Consumer Reports has also recognized Market Basket as a top supermarket operator in the Northeast.

In the very early 1900’s, Athanasios and Efrosine Demoulas emigrated from Greece to America, and in 1917, they opened the first Demoulas Market in Lowell, Massachusetts. Following in his parents’ footsteps, Telemachus Demoulas grew the company while serving as president of Demoulas Super Markets. His son Arthur T. Demoulas now serves as the president and CEO.

Market Basket has 52 stores in Massachusetts, 31 stores in New Hampshire, two stores in Maine and two stores in Rhode Island.
