Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Meijer will soon add the city of Cleveland as a store destination as it readies to open Fairfax Market, the grocer’s first small-format market outside of Michigan.

The new 40,000-square-foot market will be located at 2190 E. 105th Street and is slated to open Jan. 16.

The city of Cleveland, Cleveland Clinic, Meijer, Fairfax Renaissance Development Corp. and Fairmount Properties broke ground in December 2021 for the new grocery market, which is part of a mixed-use neighborhood revitalization project.

As part of the Cleveland Innovation District, the new Fairfax Market will create a healthier community by addressing food insecurity as well as enhance economic development, Meijer said in a statement.

"Fairfax Market is committed to being more than just a new store. We will be an involved partner, investing in the community and supporting local businesses," said Fairfax Market Store Director Alan Jordan in a statement.

Meijer became the grocery partner for the project based on the offerings of its small-format market design, seen in cities across Michigan.

"We look forward to providing convenient access to fresh, quality food and other necessities at good prices, and we can't wait to welcome our neighbors into the store next month," Jordan added.

Fairfax Market will feature fresh food, artisanal groceries and a wide selection of Meijer and national brand products. The new store will include more than 2,000 local products, a floral and gift shop, health and beauty products, and an international section of products from around the globe.

The new store, which will bring approximately 50 jobs to the area, will include a 54-seat cafe space, featuring coffee and sandwiches from Saucy Coffee and sushi from Hissho Sushi.
