New Whole Foods Market Opening in New York City

Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods Market will open a new store in New York City’s NoMad area (located at 63 Madison Ave., between 27th Street and 28th Street) on June 1. The more than 54,000-square-foot store will house over 1,000 local items from the New York City area, and will introduce more local suppliers and products.

Additionally, customers of the store will have food choices from more than 20 local farms, including salads from Gotham Greens; microgreens from Upward Farms; basil, parsley and cilantro from Square Roots; and Sourced for Good produce.

The new market will have on-site dining options, as well, including Mediterranean venue Za’atar and offerings from Yosi Kosher Kitchen, Angel Bakeries and Nomad 63 by Whole Foods Market.

There will be a full-service coffee bar (New York’s Cafe Grumpy); a full-service seafood counter (with local options from West Robins Oyster Co., Lagniappe Foods and Catsmo Artisan Smokehouse); a full-size meat counter (with local options from Briarwood Cattle Farm and Brooklyn Cured Sausage); and a bar that offers beer, wine and bar snacks.

The specialty department, which Whole Foods states will celebrate cheesemakers and artisanal producers, will have local items provided by Severino Pasta, Brooklyn’s Crown Finish Caves and Maya’s Jams. Additionally, cheesemongers at the cheese counter will be available to provide cheese recommendations and prepare custom-made cheese boards.

Local suppliers making their debut at Whole Foods Market include Nguyen Coffee Supply, Black Seed Bagels, Rind (plant-based specialty cheese), Anjali’s Cup (turmeric and chai elixirs) and chocolate bars courtesy of North South Confections.

Whole Foods Market also has plans to provide additional local services to the NoMad community, including working with Rethink Food, and providing food donations to the organization.

Whole Foods Market, which confirmed in May the closure of six stores, including two in Chicago, has more than 500 stores in the United States.
