Peapod Launching Same-Day Delivery Pilot

Peapod Digital Labs, the e-commerce engine for Ahold Delhaize USA, has begun offering shoppers a same-day delivery option in select markets.
The offering is using last-mile logistics company Deliv to provide delivery on online orders in as soon as four hours for Giant Food Stores shoppers in select ZIP codes near Willow Grove, Pa. The service, which integrates with the existing e-commerce offer for Giant shoppers, is intended to provide an additional option for shoppers who already have access to next-day delivery from Peapod’s own fleet. Officials said the company had plans to expand the offering to millions of additional shoppers at Giant and other Ahold Delhaize brands offering Peapod online shopping through 2020, using multiple partnerships with third-party fulfillment companies.
“At Peapod Digital Labs, it is our mission to support each of Ahold Delhaize USA’s local brands in providing an industry-leading omnichannel experience for their customers. This means being there for customers, anytime, anywhere—within hours,” said J.J. Fleeman, president of Peapod Digital Labs and chief e-commerce officer of Ahold Delhaize USA, in a statement. “Through Peapod Digital Labs’ relationship with Deliv, we will assist the brands as they continue to conquer the last mile, and rapidly scale same-day delivery to the benefit of millions of local brand shoppers by 2020. Deliv is an example of many partners we will work with to deliver this benefit to customers.”
The move is part of a comprehensive digital makeover at Ahold Delhaize that among other things intends to provide same-day or immediate delivery options to 65% of the company's shoppers.

To take advantage of same-day delivery in the pilot area, Giant shoppers complete their order as usual via Peapod.com and select a one-hour delivery window at checkout. Specially trained shoppers then hand-pick the order at stores. Customers can track their orders and receive notifications when their groceries are on the way. When the Deliv driver arrives, he or she will review the order with the customer.
