Pennsylvania to Get a Walmart Fulfillment Center This Spring

Walmart's newest fulfillment center, focused on supporting the company's growing e-commerce business, will open in Shippensburg, Pa., this spring, the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer said March 8.

The 1.8 million-square-foot facility, located at 2281 United Drive, will create as many as 600 permanent, full-time jobs, according to Walmart. Unlike Walmart's distribution centers, which receive and hold products until they are sent out to Walmart stores, fulfillment centers support the company's Walmart.com business, storing items until they are picked, packed and shipped directly to customers.

Shippensburg's state-of-the-art fulfillment center, said Steve Miller, SVP of Walmart U.S. supply chain operations, "will be instrumental in providing our customers with increased access and faster shipping."

In the company's fourth-quarter and full-fiscal-year earnings report last month, Walmart said that U.S. e-commerce sales were up 70% on a two-year stack—although growth decelerated in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2022, down to 1% year over year from 8% and 6% in the third and second quarters, respectively. In December, Walmart announced it would open a 900,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Lebanon, Tenn., this fall; the company also plans to open a fulfillment center in the Dallas suburb of Lancaster, Texas, in 2023.

The Shippensburg facility, Walmart said in a news release, "is part of a broader initiative to add more capacity into Walmart's supply chain" as the retailer prepares for further growth. In September, the company said it planned to hire 20,000 new permanent associates for a variety of supply-chain roles at both Walmart and Sam's Club facilities.

The full-time roles available at the new Shippensburg fulfillment center will qualify for Walmart’s total rewards and benefits plans, including health insurance, 401(k) matching, paid time off and access to free college tuition, the company noted.
