Publix Super Markets on Wednesday opened its newest Georgia location at Gateway Town Crossing in Jefferson, about an hour north of Atlanta. And that's not the only state outside its home of Florida that Publix is marching into.

The 48,000-square-foot supermarket at 51 Old Farm Road in Northeast Georgia is part of the employee-owned retailer’s expansion outside its home state of Florida.

“We are very excited for the opening of our newest Publix at Gateway Town Crossing,” said Nicole Krauss, Publix media relations manager, in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to provide premier service and quality products to new and existing customers in this growing market.”

Publix currently operates 1,325 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The state of Kentucky is next—an area with long-established market leaders Kroger and Walmart.

“We are excited for Kentuckians to begin experiencing the Publix difference as we continue to expand our footprint in the Bluegrass State,” Publix Director of Communications Maria Brous said in a statement regarding the grocery retailer's acquired property for a fourth store in Kentucky.

Furthering its Kentucky markings, Publix President Kevin Murphy expressed optimism on Monday about Joey Riddle being promoted to the company’s Charlotte Division VP following Chuck Roskovich’s retirement news.

“Joey is a dynamic leader who motivates and inspires his associates to achieve their personal best,” said Murphy in a statement. “He took the opportunity to grow with Publix as we expanded into the Charlotte market and has been integral to establishing Publix as the premier grocer across the division. I am proud of what he has been able to accomplish so far and excited to see the contributions he will continue to make as we enter the Kentucky market, as well as in our existing operating area.”

Publix first made the announcement of its march into Kentucky in 2021. Last June, the grocery retailer broke ground in Louisville, at 2500 Terra Crossing Blvd., in The Terra Crossing Shopping Center, which will be the grocer’s first Kentucky location. The store is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.
