Publix reopens store damaged by Hurricane Ian

Publix Super Markets reopened one of its grocery stores that was badly damaged by Hurricane Ian last September.

The Lakeland, Florida-based grocer’s Fort Myers Beach location at 4791 Estero Blvd. welcomed shoppers back into the store on Thursday.

“Last year’s storm still impacts many residents, and we know how important it is to provide them with these basic but important items,” said Lindsey Willis, Publix media relations manager, in a statement.

During the reopening, the grocery retailer provided boxed lunches to residents and construction crews who are continuing to rebuild homes and infrastructure on the island.

Shoppers were also given care packages filled with nonperishable essentials like storage bags, plastic cutlery, napkins, plates and cups.

Darryll Yarick will continue to serve as store manager of the 29,425-square-foot store that offers departments for grocery, dairy, frozen food, seafood, meat and fresh produce, as well as a full-service bakery and deli.

Yarick has 18 years of service with Publix and five years at the Fort Myers Beach location. He joins the majority of his stores’ associates returning to their home store to continue serving the community, Publix said in a statement.

Last week, Publix continued its Florida expansion with a new store opening in Neptune Beach, Florida. The new store includes the grocery retailer’s "Pours" concept offering shoppers the option to sip and shop.
