Robert Sumas Takes CEO Role at Village

Succeeds brother James; William Sumas new chairman. Robert Sumas takes over CEO role from his brother James as part of Village Super Market's planned succession.

James Sumas has officially passed the role of CEO of Village Super Market to his brother Robert Sumas, and his role as chairman to his cousin, William Sumas.

Those changes were part of a planned succession for the Springfield, N.J.-based ShopRite operator and enacted at Village’s annual meeting Friday.

James Sumas, 84, was elected chairman in 1989 and named CEO in 2002. He has served variously as VP, treasurer and a director of the family-run company since its incorporation in 1955. In recognition of James Sumas’ 62 years of service the board has appointed him to the role of chairman emeritus.

Robert Sumas, 76, has served as president of the company since 2009. He has served variously asEVP, COO, secretary and a director since 1969.

William Sumas, 70, has been vice chairman since 2009. He has served as VP and a director of the company since 1980. Since 1989, he has served as an EVP.

Springfield, N.J.-based Village owns and operates 29 ShopRite supermarkets located in northern, central and southern New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
