Schnucks will debut its newest grocery concept, the smaller-format Schnucks Fresh, in Jasper, Ind., on Aug. 18.

The family-owned St. Louis-based grocer announced plans for the new concept back in March. Jasper's Schnucks Fresh will open at 3605 N. Newton St. in an 18,000-square-foot leased space that formerly housed a Cash Saver store.

The emphasis at the new concept will be, as the name suggests, on fresh foods departments, including produce, meat, seafood and bakery. Curbside pickup will be available in partnership with Instacart. The store, Schnucks' sixth location in Southern Indiana, will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Ted Walker, a 40-year grocery industry veteran who has been with Schnucks since 2008, is relocating from Columbia, Ill., to manage the store, according to a Schnucks news release. "We're anxious to get this store open so that we can bring our new neighbors fresh options that they will be proud to serve to their families," Walker said in the release.

Schnucks previously announced that the store will employ about 30 people; prospective candidates are encouraged to apply via the Schnucks Careers page.

The launch of Schnucks Fresh follows the debut in June 2020 of EatWell, a Natural Food Store by Schnucks, in Columbia, Mo. That store is 42,000 square feet and employs about 80 people. In total, Schnuck Markets operates 110 stores in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The company now is in its fourth generation of family leadership, with Ted Schnuck being promoted earlier this month to EVP within the company that his great-grandmother founded in 1939. Schnucks is led by company Chairman and CEO Todd Schnuck.
