SpartanNash is rolling out on-demand grocery delivery through DoorDash to more than 100 of the company's retail stores, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer and wholesaler announced May 10. In addition, the DoorDash delivery offering will be available to SpartanNash's network of 2,100 independent grocers served through the company's wholesale business.

"Customer-centric innovation is a key priority to drive growth at SpartanNash, and joining forces with DoorDash will enable us to expand our customer base and capture more of the grocery retail market by rapidly scaling our digital offering with a leading partner," SpartanNash President and CEO Tony Sarsam said in a statement. "We know our customers’ grocery needs well and have the supply chain and retail footprint to provide strategic service based on their preferences."

Family Fare and Martin's Super Markets in the Midwest are among the SpartanNash stores that will offer speedy home delivery via DoorDash. Independent retail clients of SpartanNash likewise will be able to offer their own customers online ordering through the DoorDash Marketplace and delivery through the San Francisco-based tech company's DoorDash Drive white-label fulfillment platform.

"We are excited to partner with SpartanNash to bring innovative e-commerce solutions to their beloved grocery banners across the Midwest, independent grocers and retailers so that they can build their omnichannel presence and provide consumers with access to convenient, on-demand grocery delivery," DoorDash co-founder and CEO Tony Xu said in a news release.

The partnership with SpartanNash isn't DoorDash's first with a major grocery retailer: In February, Albertsons Cos. announced that it would offer 30-minute grocery delivery through DoorDash in more than 300 Albertsons banner stores. That announcement followed DoorDash's move into really, really fast delivery of grocery and household essentials in New York City, where DoorDash launched delivery within 10 to 15 minutes from its DashMart convenience-store concept in December. As part of the new deal with DoorDash, SpartanNash also will serve as a distributor to DashMart locations in New York, with plans to add additional locations in the future, the companies noted in their news release.

SpartanNash and Albertsons retail rival Kroger debuted a 30-minute delivery service, Kroger Delivery Now, in partnership with Instacart in September; Giant and Publix rolled out express delivery with Instacart shortly thereafter.
