Stop & Shop announced the launch of a new fuel program called Restore, which aims to reduce emissions. When customers fill up at any of their 105 Stop & Shop fuel stations in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the Restore program will calculate and offset tailpipe emissions through investments in certified carbon reduction projects.

Some of the carbon reduction programs, according to Stop & Shop, include reforestation efforts and renewable energy initiatives such as wind and solar. The 100-year old retailer hopes to reduce emissions with this campaign by up to 30%. It says Restore is just another part of its ongoing commitment to reduce its effect on the environment while enabling customers to take part.

“We’re committed to running our business sustainably and responsibly,” said Gordon Reid, Stop & Shop president. “Together with our customers, we’re reducing our environmental impact and helping the communities we serve. We’re proud to be a part of the solution when it comes to climate change and to be leading the way in terms of fuel emissions reductions in our industry.”

To ensure the integrity of the program, Stop & Shop has enlisted GreenPrint, an environment technology company that will provide real-time audited reporting on carbon emissions.

“We are excited to work with Stop & Shop to help them meet the needs of today’s consumers in a purpose-driven way with an eye on a better tomorrow through more sustainable practices,” said Pete Davis, founder and CEO of Atlanta-based GreenPrint. “Through the Restore program, Stop & Shop is differentiating their brand. They are empowering consumers to make better choices at the pump while giving back to the local communities they serve and making a positive impact on the environment.”

GreenPrint was founded by a team of business people with an expertise in loyalty and rewards programs. In partnering with clients such as Shop & Stop and their sister company Giant/Martin's, as well as Kroger, GreenPrint has reduced emissions in the amount of more than a billion gallons of fuel annually in 14 countries. GreenPrint has also put in place certified carbon offset and renewable energy projects with more than 2,000 nonprofits worldwide.
